What are varicose veins?

Most people have seen varicose veins on themselves or others. They appear as dark bluish branched or twisted veins that are at the surface of the skin. They result from the collection of blood due to improper functioning of valves within the veins. When this happens, blood accumulates in certain venous branches underneath the skin and over time, they have the unsightly appearance of swollen, dark, river-like branches. And since they represent improper blood flow, they hinder proper functioning of the circulatory system, potentially leading to cardiovascular problems.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are usually seen on the legs, arms, face, head and/or chest, are very thin, and have a spider-web appearance. Similar to varicose veins, they are usually red or blue in color, they appear at the surface of the skin, and they may be associated with more systemic vascular problems. While varicose veins are often accompanied by discomfort, spider veins usually do not involve pain.

At Wisconsin Vein Center and MediSpa, our goal is to become the recognized leader in providing the highest quality minimally-invasive, medically-based treatments to individuals of all ages to maximize their health and appearance in a calming, soothing environment.
